주요대학들의 2010학년도 수시모집 원서접수가 마감됐다. 지난해보다 모집정원이 약 2만 명 정도 증가함에 따라 수험생들의 관심이 어느 때보다 높았던 것으로 보여지고 있다.
 
수시모집은 학교생활기록부, 면접 그리고 논술 등을 활용해 입학생을 결정한다. 때문에 수험생들은 원하는 대학 지원 시 학생부와 논술, 심층면접, 인적성검사 등 학교별 전형 사항을 고려해 수시 준비를 시작해야 한다. 특히 일반전형의 경우 학생부 성적이 큰 비중을 차지하지만 합격 여부는 ‘논술’ 에 달려 있다 고 해도 과언이 아니다. 교과성적 이 상대적으로 좋지 않는 경우에도 논술 성적으로 충분히 극복할 수 있다.  
수시 원서 접수 이후 논술 대비 방법을 유황우 언어논술 대표에게 들어본다.
 
◆지원 대학의 ‘논제 난이도’와 ‘특징’을 확인하자
 
논술고사의 평가 포인트는 제시문에 대한 비판적 읽기 능력과 통합적 사유 능력, 창의적 문제해결 능력, 논증적 글쓰기 능력 등이다. 이러한 요소들을 바탕으로 출제되기 때문에 대부분 대학들의 논제 및 제시문들 간 큰 차이가 없지만, 원하는 대학의 논제 성향을 파악하면 논술을 대비하는데 큰 도움이 될 수 있다.
 
서울대, 연세대, 고려대, 서강대 등은 심층적이며 다각적인 창의능력을 중시하기 경향을 보인다. 때문에 흔히 접할 수 있는 보편적인 논제인 반면 제시문의 난이도는 높은 편이다. 흔한 주제여서 창의적인 글쓰기가 쉽지 않지만 일반 사람들과는 다른 관점에서 생각해보는 노력이 필요하다. 영어 제시문을 출제하는 동국대와 한국외대의 경우도 지문의 난이도는 비교적 높지 않다.
 
◆인문계도 ‘ 수리 논술’ 예외 없다

올해 논술고사도 대부분 대학들이 지난해처럼 통합교과형으로 출제할 것으로 예상되고 있다. 이 때문에 인문계 논술을 준비 할 때도 수리논술 부분을 배제 하기가 힘들어 졌다. 물론 수리논술문제가 인문계 논술에서 큰 비중을 차지하는 것은 아니지만, 합격여부에 영향력을 끼치는 것은 사실이다. 고난도 수리 배경 지식을 익히는 것 보다는, 일반적 사회적 현상을 얼마나 수리적으로 추론하고 논리적으로 서술할 수 있느냐가 채점 핵심임을 잊지 말자.
 
논제가 요약∙비교형, 설명∙자료 해석형, 비판∙논술∙대안제시형 등으로 세분화 했다는 점도 알아둬야 한다. 이를 위해선 다양한 사회 현상을 계량화한 도표나, 그래프 등 자료를 해석 한 결과를 자신의 언어로 설명해 답안을 작성하는 연습을 해야 한다. 자료를 응용해 창의적 답안을 구성하는 능력이 어려운 만큼, 고득점을 얻을 수 있는 부분이기 때문이다.
 
◆자연계열 고득점 포인트는 수리 아닌 ‘서술능력’
 
논술고사는 말 그대로 논리적으로 글을 쓰는 것이다. 자신이 아는 내용이나 생각을 글로 표현해야 하는 것이 논술의 가장 기본이 된다. 자연계열 논술도 마찬가지다. 서술능력이 뒷받침되어야 높은 점수를 얻을 수 있는 문제 들의 출제 빈도가 높아지고 있다.
 
개념 이해를 바탕으로 한 적용, 해결 방법 제시, 공통점과 차이점 기술, 개념 및 과정 설명, 탐구 과정의 타당성에 대한 견해, 과학적 추론 방법의 오류 찾기, 실험 결과 예측 등 다양한 논제가 출제되고 있으므로, 교과의 기본 개념을 단순 암기하거나 단순한 수리과정을 나열하는 것이 아닌 차별화된 글쓰기 훈련으로 서술능력을 키워야 한다.
 
◆출제 의도 파악하고, ‘실전’처럼 연습을
 
논술고사 당락 여부의 바탕은 출제 의도 파악에 있다. 논제나 제시문을 정확히 파악하지 못하고 ‘ 삼천포로 빠지는’ 글을 쓰는 경우 물론 감점 요소가 되기에 충분하다. 때문에 어떤 의도에서 이 논제 등을 제시했는지 부터 확인하고 글쓰기에 들어가야 한다.
 
이를 위해서는 각 대학의 기출문제와 비슷한 유형의 문제로 실전처럼 연습해보는 것도 좋은 방법이다. 또 각 대학에서 발표한 논술 채점 후기를 참 고하면 원하는 대학의 채점 기준을 파악 할 수 있어 논술준비에 큰 도움을 준다. 수험생 스스로가 출제 의도, 논제, 제시문, 예시 답안 등 논술 문제를 직접 만들어 풀어보는 것도 한 방법이다.

[Yu Hwang Wu Korean Language Classroom] How to Prepare for College Entrance Essay Tests for 2010 Occasional Admission

Major universities of Korea finished receiving applications for 2010 occasional admission. Since the number limit of students for admission increased by about 20 thousand, compared to that of the last year, students’ interest appeared to be higher than ever.

The process of the occasional admission of college consists of GPA review, interview, essay test, and so on, so candidates for the occasional admission should consider selection criteria of the college they want to enter, such as criteria for GPA, essay tests, in-depth interview and personality and academic aptitude tests before start to prepare for a particular college admission.

In the case of the regular admission of colleges, even though GPA occupies a large part in the admission, students’ success or failure to enter colleges depends on how they do well in “essay tests”. Even high school records that are not good can be compensated by results of essay tests.

◆Check the ‘Difficulty of Essay Subjects’ and ‘Characteristics of the Subjects’ of the College You Apply for.

Assessment of a written essay is based on student’s ability to read critically given statements, to think multidisciplinarily, to make creative solutions, to write in a demonstrative style and the like. Since questions of essay tests are made from these assessment factors, there have been few differences between subjects and statements of colleges’ essay tests, but it will be very helpful for students to understand previously the trend of test subjects of the universities they want to enter in preparing for essay tests.

The major universities such as Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University and Sogang University have shown the trend of focusing on students’ in-depth and multi-dimensional originality. So, the essay tests the universities gave tackled common subjects, but the given statements of the tests showed a higher level of difficulty. Even though it was not easy to write creatively with a common subject, students needed to think from a different point of view with their originality. The universities that give essay tests including statements in English such as Dongguk University and Hanguk University of Foreign Studies have presented essay tests where the degree of difficulty of given statements was not high.

◆There is No Exception for Students of Liberal Arts Track in ‘Mathematical Essay Tests’

Most of the universities are expected to give essay tests of a multidisciplinary type like they did last year. It became hard to take no notice of mathematical essay writing even when essay tests of the humanities are prepared. Mathematical essay writing, although not being a large part in the essay tests for high school students of liberal arts track, has effects on student's success in the entrance exam to college. Bear in mind that the key point of essay assessment is how well a student reasons mathematically about a social phenomenon and describes it logically, not how much mathematical knowledge a student has.

The students should also be aware of the fact that the test questions consist of several types like summary/comparison type, description/data interpretation type, and critical/logical/alternative-suggesting type. To prepare for such types of questions, it is necessary to practice interpreting data of tables and graphics on a variety of social phenomena and accounting for results of the interpretation in their own way, for students can score many points in these types of questions requiring them to present creative writings by applying data.

◆A Key Point to Succeed in Scientific Essay Tests is Students’ Ability to ‘Give a Description’, not to Understand Mathematical Principals.

The purpose of essay tests is to test how much a student can write logically. That is, expressing one's ideas or thoughts in a written language is the basis of essay tests. That is true also of scientific essay tests. There have been increasing questions in essay tests that require students to make a description logically.

Since various types of questions have been presented, like application by understanding concepts, solution making, description of things in common and in difference, description of concepts and processes, opinions of validity of research processes, searching for errors in scientific reasoning, and prediction of test results, students need to develop the ability to describe by practicing writing in a differentiated way, not just by memorizing basic concepts or citing mathematical processes.

◆See the Intention of Questions and Practice Like ‘Real Chance’.

A success or failure in an essay test depends on how well a student understands the intention of a question. If the subject of a statement or the statement itself is misunderstood and so a student gets sidetracked in writing, it may result in a cut in marks. Students at first should check a question for its intention from which the statement is folded and then start to write.

I recommend practicing, in a real situation, writing essays of the similar type to the previous essay tests given by colleges. Also, it is helpful to refer to postscripts universities reported after grading essay papers, which will help students catch the scoring criteria of the universities they want. For students themselves to make out questions of an essay test by setting intention, subject, given statements and sample answers and then to write out the answers is also a method of practicing.

“Unlike the regular admission of college where SAT occupies a large part, essay tests are receiving an increasing attention in the occasional admission,” the representative of Yu Hwang Wu Korean Language Classroom said, “and students have to check previous essay tests carried out by colleges and select weighty ones, focusing on strategic learning, and specifically, it is very important to practice writing steadily with former essay test questions and expected questions of colleges they want to enter.”
