최근 교육계 최대 이슈는 단연 '입학사정관제'다. 실제 2010학년도부터는 신입생 정원 중 약 1 만 명을 입학사정관제로 선발 된다. 또, 정부는 올해 입학사정관제를 도입한 서울대와 연세대 등 47 개 대학들에게 수십억 원의 예산을 지원 할 방침이다.

이처럼 사회적 열풍을 일으키고 있는 입학사정관제는 도대체 무엇인가?

입학사정관제는 성적 위주의 획일적인 평가에서 벗어나 다양한 평가요소를 가지고 학생의 잠재력과 소질, 적성, 인성과 태도 등을 최대한 반영해 뽑는 새로운 입시 제도이다.

이 같은 입학사정관제의 본격적인 도입을 앞두고 각 대학은 준비에 한창이다. 학원가에서도 이미 입학사정관제를 겨냥한 맞춤형 컨설팅 학원이 생겨나며 학원가의 새로운 트렌드로 부상하고 있다.

최근에는 이명박 대통령이 임기 중에 입학사정관제로 학생을 100% 뽑는 대학이 나오도록 하겠다고 역설하면서 그 어느 때보다 관심이 뜨겁다.

입학사정관제는 취지로만 보자면 지금껏 어떤 교육제도 보다 많은 장점을 지니고 있다. 무엇보다 사교육 문제의 해소와 대학 자율화 측면에서 당위성을 갖는다. 계획대로라면 현재의 성적 지상주의 풍토를 개선하고 공교육을 되살릴 수도 있다. 대학들도 좋은 학생들을 자율적인 기준에 따라 선발할 수 있게 된다.

하지만 모든 제도가 그렇듯 입학사정관제 도입과 정착을 위해서는 오랜 연구와 사회적 합의 도출 과정이 필요하다. 정부 시책에 따라 대학들은 입학사정관 전형을 지속적으로 확대할 계획이지만, 아직 검증이 덜 된 제도를 서둘러 도입하는 것은 아닌지 우려의 목소리가 나오는 것도 이 때문이다.

특히 입학사정관제는 공정성과 전문성을 어떻게 확보하느냐가 관건이다. 학생선발 등에 대한 전문가인 '입학사정관'의 심사에 의해 전적으로 신입생의 당락이 결정되기 때문이다.

실제 대학들은 입학사정관 선발인원을 올해 입시에서 대폭 늘린다지만 확보예정인 입학사정관이 4~15명에 불과하고 그나마 89%가 계약직과 비정규직이다. 전문성 시비는 물론 사정관 신분의 불안정으로 인한 입시 비리가 걱정되는 대목이다. 심지어 소송 등 불미스러운 일에 휘말릴 수도 있다.

새로운 제도가 도입돼도 대학이 학생의 잠재적인 능력과 개성이 아닌 지표로 나타나는 성적 우수자를 우선적으로 선발하려고 할 가능성이 여전히 높다는 학부모들의 우려와 불신도 새 제도의 도입을 가로막는 부분이다.

때문에 입학사정관제가 학부모들의 신뢰를 얻고 안정적으로 정착될 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 정부와 대학의 철저한 준비는 물론 지속적으로 공정성과 전문성을 담보해 나갈 수 있는 합리적 시책과 올바른 시행이 병행돼야 한다.
